Tutorial: Dr Pan Teaches How LCD Module Works And How To Choose Good-Quality LCD Module

Dr Pan: Welcome to DISPLAY Museum. I am Dr Pan, the curator of Museum.

Greg: Hello, Dr Pan. I am Greg. I came here to learn about LCD module.

Dr Pan: Hello, Greg. In short, it consists of LCD screen and LED backlight. The working principle of LCD module is that LED backlight module emits uniform light to the surface as the light source of LCD screen and LCD screen which works as a switch is to control the light “on/off”, resulting in the display of the image.

In order to control the display content, we have to use IC to issue the commands. According to the different locations of IC, it can be divided into COG and COB LCD module. Based on the display content, it can be divided into segment, dot matrix, graphic and character LCD module.

Normally, it is much thicker than OLED since it has a backlight as the light source. It can be very thin, but the thinner it gets the more technical problems we have to solve, the higher the price will be. The advantage of LCD module technology is that it is very mature and very stable, the unit price is significantly lower than OLED’s.

Greg: Dr Pan, how can we confirm if LCD module is good quality?

Dr Pan: That is a good question. There are several factors we need to consider.

  1. Defective pixel. The less the better. LCD screen is composed of many display points.  If there is no defective pixel, it is class AA; it is class A when there are less than 4 defective pixels and only 1 bright spot; and it is class B when there are less than 4 defective pixels and 2 bright spots.
  2. The brighter the better.
  3. Contrast rate. It means the comparison between the brightest part and the darkest part of LCD. The minimum contrast rate is 350:1, the higher the better.
  4. Response time. The faster the better. The minimum response time is 30ms, it means 33 frames per second.
  5. Color Gamut. The higher the better.
  6. Viewing angle. The wider the better. TN LCD is only 90 degree, HTN is 110 degree, STN is 210 degree to 255 degree, FSTN is the advanced version of STN with one compensation film, the view angle is better.

01 Communication

To start, you have to elaborate on your specific demands. It is best if you can offer your drawings. From our experience, many of our customers only have a concept in their mind and they ask for a quote or samples directly. This is not how it works. Sometimes a video conference or a face-face conference is necessary before we can fully understand your requirements. It usually involves a lot of questions, such as: 1. What is the application of the products ? 2. What is the timeline you’re working from? 3. What problem do we expect us to solve for you?

02 Design

After the first step, we both have some basic understandings . We pass some projects which are not suitable for us. And we can move on the next step: design. To better service our customers and save both of us some time, we will ask you to fill in some of our online forms. Online form custom LCD module. This is the basic information we have to acquire. If you are not certain about some parameters of custom LCD module, we will make the most reasonable design for you from engineering prospect.

03 Quote

Once the preliminary drawings are approved, we offer an official quotation which includes the unit prices, the tooling fees and the other details. Submit the payment if you are happy with the prices. If you can’t accept the prices, we can go back to step two. we can make it cheaper by simplifying the design. After we receive the payment, we will start to make the official drawings. It usually takes 1 to 3 days.

04 Prototypes

At this stage, we build samples based on tooling orders to justify proof of the concept. We can’t start the prototype process unless you sign on the official drawings. It usually takes 7 to 25 days to finish the samples base on the difficulties.

05 Validation

You as the customer validate the efficacy of the custom design before we agree to move into the larger production. It is normal to make several times of prototypes. One time tooling fee and no extra cost until you are satisfied.
