Tutorial: Dr Pan Teaches How LED Backlight Works

Dr Pan: Welcome to DISPLAY Museum. I am Dr Pan, the curator of Museum.

Greg: Hello, Dr Pan. I am Greg. I came here to learn about LED backlight.

Dr Pan:  Hello, Greg. LED backlight is the light source for LCD screen since it can’t emit light by itself. It is an optical component and non-standard product which is attached to the back of LCD. LED backlight can also be used as a separate lighting device. For example: backlight keyboard, smart lighting socket and currently fashionable backlight capacitive switch.

The light emitted from the LED enters into the light guide plate and is evenly distributed to the surface. The reflection sheet reflects the light from the back of light guide plate to the surface and the diffusion sheet diffuses the light more evenly. The light blocking film prevents the light from leaking from the edges. Eventually, it turns a single light point into a uniformly illuminated board of light.

Greg: Dr Pan, I am wondering why LED backlight is so popular.

Dr Pan: There are many reasons.

  1. It is highly customized. It can be made into different shapes and brightness according to different requirements.
  2. It is more energy-saving. LED backlight saves at least 40% energy if it is compared with traditional CCFL backlight in civilian industry.
  3. It is green and environmentally-friendly. It does not contain any environmentally harmful substances: for example, mercur
  4. It has a wider color gamut. It can display more vivid color and make a better color representation.
    It has a longer serving time, 50 thousand hours.
  5. It is lighter and thinner. The selling point of LED backlight products in the market is super thin,which meets the fashion needs of consumers.

Light Guide Plate

  1.  Injection molding light guide plate. Advantage:  light can be distributed much evener and much brighter.   Disadvantage: High tooling fee(around 1000 USD). It can be refunded once your order quantity is up to 50,000 pcs.  Highly recommend. 
  2. Laser-cut light guide plate. The following standard light guide thicknesses are available: 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm, 8.0mm and 10.0mm. No tooling fee is required.

PCB or FPC

  1.  PCB is the most commonly used connection type for LED backlight because it is the easiest and cheapest way. It can not only simplify the production process but also save the time and work of workers. Each prototype of LED backlight requires a unique model of PCB.  It contains many possibilities of combinations.
  2.  FPC is the perfect choice for super-thin LED backlight, but most expensive(high tooling fee). It is not recommended unless it is necessary.

Connection Type

  1.   PCB with hard PIN. Most commonly used and cheap way.
  2. PCB without PIN.   Not Common, a suitable choice for thin option.
  3. Wire connection. Flexible.  Manually solder the wires on the control board. 
  4.  Wire with connector. Flexible and convenient, but more expensive.
  5.  PCB with metal PIN.  Barely used. Not recommend. 

LED lamps

  1. DIP LED including 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, power consumption 0.06W. Cost-saving and light reach longer distances with the same power consumption. Application: price-sensitive electricity meter.  
  2. SMD LED divided by power consumption.     
  3.  Small power consumption (0.06W) SMD LED including 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, and 3528.  Common used.
  4. Medium power consumption (0.1W to 0.2W) SMD LED including 3014, 4014, 5050, 2835. Used for illumination.
  5. High power consumption (0.5W to 1.0W) SMD LED including 5630, 3030, 5730, 7020, 3535, 7030. Never been used for our applications.

01 Communication

To start, you have to elaborate on your specific demands. It is best if you can offer your drawings. From our experience, many of our customers only have a concept in their mind and they ask for a quote or samples directly. This is not how it works. Sometimes a video conference or a face-face conference is necessary before we can fully understand your requirements. It usually involves a lot of questions, such as: 1. What is the application of the products ? 2. What is the timeline you’re working from? 3. What problem do we expect us to solve for you?

02 Design

After the first step, we both have some basic understandings . We pass some projects which are not suitable for us. And we can move on the next step: design. To better service our customers and save both of us some time, we will ask you to fill in some of our online forms. Online form custom LED backlight. This is the basic information we have to acquire. If you are not certain about some parameters of custom LED backlight, we will make the most reasonable design for you from engineering prospect.

03 Quote

Once the preliminary drawings are approved, we offer an official quotation which includes the unit prices, the tooling fees and the other details. Submit the payment if you are happy with the prices. If you can’t accept the prices, we can go back to step two. we can make it cheaper by simplifying the design. After we receive the payment, we will start to make the official drawings. It usually takes 1 to 3 days.

04 Prototypes

At this stage, we build samples based on tooling orders to justify proof of the concept. We can’t start the prototype process unless you sign on the official drawings. It usually takes 7 to 25 days to finish the samples base on the difficulties.

05 Validation

You as the customer validate the efficacy of the custom design before we agree to move into the larger production. It is normal to make several times of prototypes. One time tooling fee and no extra cost until you are satisfied.
